Creed peered over the side of the car through the windows.

“Stay right where you are. Don’t get out of the car.”

Hope’s parents nodded and Creed shuffled along the ground to the front of the car before the car that had just entered the parking lot passed.

“Hawk, the black Cadillac that slowed came back and turned into the lot.”

“I’m on my way back. Where are you?”

“I’m crouching on the ground at the front of the Dumonds’ car. Black Buick.”

“Roger. Coming along the north side of the building now.”

Creed watched the Caddy slow behind Hope’s parents’ car. Slowly, he pulled his gun from its holster at his side and readied for action.

The Caddy continued on to a parking space two cars over and parked.

“Hawk, the Caddy parked two cars over.”

“I have visual. Did they see the Dumonds in the car?”

“Affirmative.”

“Fuck. They’re under surveillance.”

“Agreed. I’m going to tell them to go inside. Go back around and enter the building through the back door and bring the Dumonds to the back door and out to our vehicle.”

“Roger. Going in now.”

Peeking over the hood of the Dumonds’ car, he watched the shrubs move as Hawk moved. He squat walked to the driver’s door and motioned for Mr. Dumond to roll his window down. He holstered his gun, then pulled his phone from his pocket and tapped out a message as the window was coming down. Creed looked up at him and held his forefinger to his lips. He then turned his phone around so Mr. Dumond could read the screen.

“Go inside. My partner, Hawk, is waiting for you and will bring you around through the back door. Leave your keys, I’ll bring your car to our location.”

Mr. Dumond read the screen then looked into his eyes. He saw Hope’s eyes starting at him. Brown eyes the shape of almonds, though hers were prettier. When Mr. Dumond made no effort to move, he swiped the screen on his phone and pulled up his ID with his photo. He should certainly know the name by now thanks to Piper.

Mr. Dumond looked at his phone screen then to him once more. Mr. Dumond inhaled deeply, then looked over at his wife. “Shall we go and get this over with?”

She swallowed, then nodded and opened her door. Mr. Dumond pulled the keys from the ignition and handed them to Creed before opening his door.

Creed crept back to allow the door to swing open, then slowly stood as the Dumond’s walked with each other, hand in hand, to the front door of the mortuary.

“Hawk, they’re on their way in.”

“Roger. I’m here in the front of the building to greet them.”

Creed heard the door close and looked over to see two men walking away from the Caddy.

“Caddy guests are following. Two.”

“Roger.”

Creed stepped away from the Dumonds’ car and acted as if he’d just exited the vehicle next to them. One of the men from the Caddy turned to watch him, the other continued to walk forward. Creed proceeded to walk behind the two men.
